Home Saliva Nicotine Tests: How They Work and What Sets Them Off

A home saliva nicotine test is a rapid strip test that shows whether your body has recently taken in nicotine. It reacts to nicotine from any source, so cigarettes, vapes, patches, gum and pouches can all give a positive result.

What does a saliva nicotine test detect?

The body breaks nicotine down, and what it leaves behind stays in saliva longer than nicotine itself. A rapid saliva test reacts to that. This is why the test shows nicotine use over the past days, not only the last hour.

How do you do the test?

  1. Do not eat, drink or brush your teeth shortly before, as the leaflet says.
  2. Collect saliva as the leaflet says and mix it with the buffer liquid.
  3. Put the mixture onto the sample well of the cassette.
  4. Wait the time stated in the leaflet.
  5. Read the lines within the reading window.

How do you read the lines?

Every valid test shows a control line. Whether a second line means negative or positive depends on the product, so read your leaflet. If no control line appears, the test is invalid and must be repeated with a new test. In Membrana an invalid test can be done again within the same 24 hours.

Follow the leaflet in your pack: timing and reading rules differ between products.

How long does nicotine show up in saliva?

What nicotine leaves behind in the body stays detectable for some days. A review of test methods explains that how long depends on the level before stopping, how quickly the body clears it and the test's cut-off. For some people it falls below the cut-off in about two days, and the review advises allowing six to seven days to confirm that someone has stopped.

What can make a test positive?

Nicotine from any source
  • Cigarettes, cigars, pipes.
  • Vapes and e-cigarettes with nicotine.
  • Nicotine replacement: patches, gum, lozenges, sprays.
  • Nicotine pouches and snus.

How reliable is a home test?

A rapid test has a cut-off: below it the result is negative, above it positive. Results close to the cut-off, a test read too late, or a damaged or expired test can give a wrong or invalid result. Use tests within their expiry date and read them inside the stated window.

How does Membrana use the test?

In a Membrana month you do ten saliva nicotine tests on camera: the first when you are ready, nine on random days with 24 hours each. The recording is read automatically, and a person looks at it when a reading is unclear or something needs deciding. You see each result as Negative, Positive, Invalid or Failed. An invalid test can be repeated within the same 24 hours.

Only one kind of test works: a saliva test with a cassette and a buffer liquid. It usually comes with a small pipette. You first mix your saliva with the buffer liquid, then put the mixture onto the sample well of the cassette. Kits where saliva goes directly onto the cassette, without buffer liquid, are not accepted. Lollipop-style tests held in the mouth are not accepted. Kits where the result is read on the buffer tube itself, with no separate cassette, are not accepted. No other type of kit is accepted.

If your kit is new to us it has to be set up first; this can take some time and does not count against you.

For example:
Example of the accepted kit: a buffer tube, a pipette and a saliva cassette with a sample well marked S and a result window marked C and T. Frequently asked questions

Will a nicotine patch or gum make the test positive?
Yes. The test reacts to nicotine from any source, including patches and gum. No nicotine in any form during your challenge: no cigarettes, no vaping, no heated-tobacco sticks, no nicotine patches, gum, lozenges, sprays or pouches.
Does vaping show up?
Yes, if the liquid contains nicotine.
What does an invalid result mean?
The test could not be read, usually because the control line did not appear. Repeat it with a new test. In Membrana you can do that within the same 24 hours.
How many tests do I need for a month?
At least ten, plus a few spare in case one is invalid.
Is a home test a medical test?
No. A home rapid test is a screening tool, not a medical diagnosis.
